Email Marketing 101- Five Tips To Get Started

So your business has decided to take the plunge and try out email marketing, but you're not quite sure where to start. I'm assuming you already have a list of your customers ready to go, so if not, you probably want to get on that before reading any further.

Email Marketing 101- Five Tips To Get Started

But…How do you make the most out of email marketing?

Find the Best Email Provider:

Sign up for an account with an email newsletter service, such as MailChimp or ConstantContact. Both services offer analytics so you can track how many people are on your list, who subscribes (or unsubscribes), how many opens you get, and how many people click your links.

Importance of Visuals:

Have a design template (or three) that allows for a mixture of photos and copy. After all, you want to see the product (or depiction of service) that you're shopping for, don't you? Telling someone about a beautiful bouquet that your company is now offering isn't the same as showing them. Remember, in grade school, your class did "Show and Tell"?

There's a reason it's "Show and Tell" not "Show or Tell"!

Tailor Your Call to Action Using Lists:

Create separate lists to send your campaigns out to. If you're a restaurant, have a separate list strictly for your foodie bloggers, use a call to action, or CTA, asking them to come in, try it out, and blog about it! Your regular customer list may have a call to action that is essentially the same "come in and try it out" but doesn't include the "blog about it" part of the foodie blogger call to action. Tailoring your campaigns to each list is going to give your customers a more personalized experience!

Grab Readers’ Attention:

Have a great subject line. A subject line is a preview of what your email contains, but you want to make sure people want to open your email. Avoid using all caps, but add exclamation points to the end!

You've got exciting news within your email, but you don't want to yell at your customers!

Utilize A/B Campaign Tools:

MailChimp and ConstantContact both offer A/B testing services, which include detailed performance information. Create an A/B campaign and change small things like the color of your call to action button or photos' positioning. You'll eventually see trends, like a red call to action button gets more clicks than a blue call to action button, or different subject lines see better results.

Now that you have some tips on making the most out of your email marketing campaign try them out!
